Worldwide Ubermensches 1899-1914
Mahatma Gandhi
Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, India, Mahatma Gandhi studied law and came to advocate for the rights of Indians, both at home and in South Africa. Gandhi became a leader of India's independence movement, organizing boycotts against British institutions in peaceful forms of civil disobedience. He was killed by a religious extremist in 1948. Gandhi, during 1914, went back to India and supported the Home Rule movement, and became a leader in the National Congress, he promoted a non-violent policy with which independence would be achieved.
I chose Gandhi because he was one of the major political and spiritual leaders of all time. Without him India's independence would not have been won peacefully, instead there would be wars, bloodshed and many deaths before independence was achieved. He also helped famers and workers to fight oppressive taxation, he tried to ease poverty and end discrimination. Clearly this man made a great impact in history, he is still remember today as the great spiritual and political leader today, he prevented a war which could have killed millions of innocent men, women and children.

Theodore Roosevelt
Theodore Roosevelt, who came into office in 1901 and served until 1909, is considered the first modern President because he significantly expanded the influence and power of the executive office. From the Civil War to the early of the twentieth century, the U.S. Congress was more powerful than the other 2 branches of government. Roosevelt, believing that the President had the right to use all powers except those that were specifically denied him to accomplish his goals, seized all of the power that the executive branch had and exercised it as well. As a result, the President, rather than Congress or the political parties, became the center of the American politics. As President, Roosevelt challenged the ideas of limited government and individualism.
Instead, he advocated government regulation to achieve social and economic justice. He used executive orders to accomplish his goals.
Theodore Roosevelt was a very efficient president he was always doing something productive wether it be improving the economy or even passing new foreign policies. Roosevelt was a very popular president, he used the media at the time to appeal directly to the people, a president who is liked by the people has the ability to rule the country with more control. Without Roosevelt the executive branch may have never reached out and taken its own power, or maybe have never exercised it, which would lead to Congress being the most powerful branch, which would be bad for the country since Congress is not very productive at passing bills and laws. Without Roosevelt America would not be the super power that it is today, yes it would be a big power, but without the power of the executive branch America would be unproductive, even during a war, Congress would not be able to make the right decisions at a time of crisis.
